The Jain religion, like Buddhism, evolved from Hindu thought and philosophy.
It emerged as a separate religion as far back as the 8th century BCE.
The present form of Jainism practiced though took shape with the reforms and teachings of Vardhamana Mahavira in the 6th century BCE.
Mahavira was born a prince who, at the age of 30, abandoned his wealthy lifestyle, became a renunciate, and committed himself to fasting and
self-mortification in order to purify his consciousness and discover the meaning of existence.
After this, he never lived in a house again, owned property, and according to one sect of Jainism - wore any clothing of any kind
(another other sect believes he wore no clothes but a white robe).
