Marshall & Susie Galinsky from Harrisburg, Pennsylvania, USA

Marshall and Susie became lacto-ovo vegetarians in April 1993, primarily for health considerations but also for moral reasons. As they learned more about cruelty in the farming industry, their moral convictions grew stronger but were unable to make the break from dairy and eggs. That is, until they attended the World Vegetarian Congress conference in Toronto in July 2000.
After listening to compelling Congress speakers like T. Colin Campbell and Robert Cohen, Marshall and Susie became vegans. Ten months later, they've reaped impressive benefits in going vegan, not to mention Marshall's lost 70 pounds and several pant sizes !
Marshall and Susie are avid supporters of their local vegetarian club, vegetarian restaurants, and of course VegDining !

Susan Fleming from Colorado Springs, Colorado, USA

Susan's been a lacto-ovo vegetarian for seven years. She loves to cook and was very excited to be able to attend the Congress and sample the delicious vegan food. This was the first vegetarian festival that Susan ever attended !
Although there aren't any fully vegetarian restaurants in Colorado Springs (yet), Susan's favorites include veg-friendly establishments like Gertrude's, Adam's Mountain Cafe and Dale Street Cafe.

World Vegetarian Month Grand Prize

Janet Gottlieb from Brooklyn, New York, USA

Janet's a long-time vegetarian, becoming vegetarian thirty-two years ago after refusing to participate in a Grade 9 Biology class dissection project. Recalls Janet, "when my teacher announced that my refusal to participate in frog dissection was 'immature', I concluded that my animal-protective position was inconsistent with meat-eating, and stopped."
Janet's favorite vegetarian restaurant is Mavalli Palace on E. 29th Street in Manhattan and enjoys the fact that vegetarian food is readily available throughout New York. While not currently involved with any vegetarian organizations per se, Janet is an active member of the Park Slope Food Coop. Janet very much enjoyed attending the Congress in Toronto. This also was Janet's first vegetarian conference.
