MAGGIE'S MERCANTILE

The daily selection and the take out availability keeps me coming back time and time again. It is obvious all of the food is fresh and healthy. You can not go anywhere else near Maggie's to get great tasting, lower priced, vegan food! Any time of year, Maggie's Mercantile is the number one place to eat your veggies."

"This little restaurant is a nice surprise, located just 4 miles north of the Pennsylvania Turnpike somewhat east of Pittsburgh. I had lunch there, which consisted of a choice of about half a dozen dishes, which can be dished out in combination. You pay by weight. There are also soups and appetizers that have fixed charges. I found the food to be tasty and well prepared. The main negative would be the meat analogues used in the majority of dishes, but what can you expect when the majority of the population, including most vegetarians, don't like real vegetarian food?

The saying goes that Pennsylvania consists of Philadelphia and Pittsburgh, and all the rest is Alabama. So it's really nice to have a restaurant like this in the "Alabama" part of Pennsylvania where you wouldn't expect it.

The restaurant does make a point of compassion in eating, so it was surprising to see a bell on a large leather strap hanging on the front door. When I asked one of the staff about it, she was surprised and said she had never noticed it and that no one had ever mentioned it before. Oh well, just a reminder, I guess, that this is Alabama.

I recommend this restaurant if you're driving across Pennsylvania. Current hours are Tuesday through Friday, 10 AM - 6 PM, Saturday, noon to 8 PM (buffet 5-8), and Sunday, noon - 6 PM."

"Maggie's is a great restaurant. It is a little tough to find the first time, but worth asking directions to. The first time we went my children wouldn't try vegan food; now they ask to go any time we are headed that way. I recommend this restaurant to anyone who wants to convince someone vegetarian food can be delicious."
